Avenel Tournament - Held Thursday 11 August

“Sun shines for
L’Oreal Ladies Day”
A beautiful sunny day greeted golfers for Avenel’s L’Oreal Ladies Day last Thursday.
Unfortunately heavy rain in the preceding days did deter a
few players, however 42 ladies took to the fairways to play for
the lovely L’Oreal prizes on offer.
In keeping with the great
weather, some hot scores were recorded on the day, and the winner
of A Grade, with the fantastic score of 83-17-66, was Julie Trask
(St. James). Julie was streets ahead of the field and actually
returned the best scratch score of the day, but the major trophy
was for the handicap event, so accordingly she received that.
Euroa golfer, Freda Edwards, received the runner-up trophy
on a count-back from Gail Leigh (Marysville), both players scoring
73 nett. However, Gail picked up a trophy for the best scratch score, having shot 86 off
the stick.
In B Grade, local members, Anne Burns and Joan Shelton were tied on net 74 at the end of the
day, but Anne triumphed in a count-back. Joan took out the B Grade
scratch with 102 off the stick. The runner up trophy was once again decided in a 3 way count-back, and
Marion Williamson (Alexandra) was the lucky one, defeating Pam
Sprunt (Mansfield) and Kath Jekabsons (Romsey), all players being
tied on nett 75.
Julie Trask, nett 66, won the Vets event and Baby Boomers went to
Denise Doolan (Woodend) with nett 74. Julie, Pat Cook and Pam Sprunt won the small teams event,
while nearest the pin on the 5th was Liz Amos (Marysville) and Helen Dennett (Kilmore) was the sharp shooter on
the 18th.
Avenel Golf Club would like to thank L’Oreal Paris for their ongoing support of our
tournament. The fantastic skincare
prize packs they provide are extremely popular with the ladies.
President Pam and Captain Lyn extend a big thank you to everyone who contributed to make the day such a success. The course was great, the organization was great, the food
was great and the company was great – what more could you ask for!!

Mabel Vearing Silver Salver - Held at Avenel, Thursday 16 June
|
|
ST. JAMES WINS MABEL VEARING SILVER SALVER
In a stark contrast to last year, when
players were literally blown off the course, this year’s Mabel
Vearing Silver Salver was played in perfect conditions.
Seventy-one players participated in the event, with teams from 15 of the 18 Dalhousie District clubs being represented.
We also had teams from Kialla, Mooroopna, Nagambie, St James and
Yarrambat Park.
The course looked great and many favourable comments were
received. Sincere thanks must go to our loyal band of
volunteers, who continue to give so much of their time to ensure
that we not only have a course to play on, but that it is in tip-top
condition. Thanks must also go to our lady members for
providing a wonderful spread for lunch, and as always, it was much
appreciated by the players.
Life Member Iris
Sidebottom, daughter of the late Mabel Vearing,
presented the Salver to the St. James team of Julie Trask, Ruth
Andrews and Pat Cook, who won with a combined score of 105 points,
the next best being Marysville on 101 points. St. James is
one of many clubs who have been good supporters of our tournaments
over the years, so it was pleasing to see them win.
A Grade was won by Editha Ott from Trentham with 37 points.
B Grade went to one of our own, Levenia Redfern, who had the best
score for the day with 39 points. C Grade was won by Ruth
Andrews from St James, on a count back from Marion Sargent from
Mansfield, both ladies scoring 38 points. Vets was won by
Levenia Redfern, and Sandi Wicking from Kilmore won the Baby
Boomers trophy. The St. James girls also won the Small Teams
event.
Nearest the Pin on the 5th
was won by Jess Pickwick from Kilmore. The 8th went to Liz Amos,
Marysville. Jan McKay from Avenel was the sharp shooter on the
14th, and Helen Dennett from Kilmore won the 18th.
Thanks again to EVERYONE
who contributed to make the day such a success. |

2011 WGV Veterans
Championships - Held at Ballarat from 28 February - 03 March
|
|
Congratulations to
Mary Campbell of Trentham GC, on winning the 36 Hole Nett in
the 55-59 Age Division of the 2011
WGV Veterans Championships.
This is a 4 day event, the
first 2 days being stroke play, with the top 8 players qualifying
for match play. There were 60 players in the field, coming from
all parts of Victoria. The new Ballarat course is very
challenging, and conditions were extremely trying, with wind and
rain on the first day, and strong winds on the second.
Mary Campbell (now playing off
a handicap of 17) was also 2010 Dalhousie Player of the Year,
and is pictured here with that trophy, presented to her at
Trentham on Monday
21 March.
